Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Southfield
Alumnae Chapter, in support of the Torch of Wisdom, Foundation,
Inc., announces a weekend Celebration of the Arts and Phenomenal
Women.”
Louisiana Hines, a centenarian plus seven
years, is one of seven metropolitan Detroit women who will be
honored for their community service during a
weekend celebration of the Arts. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.,
Southfield Alumnae Chapter, in support of the Torch of Wisdom
Foundation, Inc, is sponsoring this signature event. Delta Sigma
Theta is an international public service sorority with more than
250,000 members around the world.
The weekend celebration begins with an Art Show
and Sale featuring the works of renowned artist Synthia Saint
James. Ms. Saint James is best recognized for the 2004 Kwanzaa
postage stamp she was commissioned to design by the U. S. Postal
Service. Ms. Saint James’ work will be featured during two shows on
Friday, November 4, at Andiamo Italia, 7096 E. 14 Mile Road in
Warren, Michigan. Shows are at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Honorary
chairpersons of the Art Show and Sale are local newscasters, Diana
Lewis, Fanchon Stinger and Rhonda Walker. Sponsors of the event
are Andiamo Italia, Health Alliance Plan, Henry Ford Health System,
Marriott Hotel and Rock Financial.
The celebration continues with a luncheon
featuring Ms. Saint James and Dr. Cynthia Jacobs Carter, author of
“Africana Woman: Her Story Through Time.” The luncheon, on
Saturday, November 5, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. will also be held at Andiamo
Italia Tickets are $50.00 each. Proceeds will benefit Scholarship
Programs and community enrichment activities. Detroit Free
Columnist Rochelle Riley will be Mistress of Ceremonies for the
luncheon.
In addition to celebrating art and words, the
weekend is a tribute to women who have worked to improve the lives
of those in need. This year’s recipients of the Torch Award, in
addition to Louisiana Hines, are Dr. Wanda Cook-Robinson, Danielle
Harris, Judge Sheila Johnson, Patricia Pickens, Reverend Catherine
Roberson, and Emily Scarlett.
